Jason Tan Liwag is finishing up his Master of Science in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of the Philippines Diliman. He graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences from the Ateneo de Manila University.
His performance as anxiety-riddled Moritz Stiefel in Spring Awakening (2019) earned him a ‘Best Featured Actor (Musical)’ citation in Inquirer’s “Best of Theater (2019)” list. He’s performed as lead and supporting roles in numerous musicals such as Skin-Deep (2018), RENT: The Musical (2018), Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady (2017), & The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2014), among others.
He began his foray into film criticism as a workshop member of CINELAB under the mentorship of acclaimed critic Richard Bolisay and Cinema Centenario in 2020. He’s also one of the first members of Cine Critico Filipino (CCF) – a growing community of film critics who aspire for better dialogue between filmmakers and critics, and who aspire to develop the great Filipino audience.
Outside of his time in the laboratory, cinema, and spotlight, he likes to write screenplays and volunteer for NGOs. He someday hopes to be a professor of science, arts, and humanities to be able to continue his storytelling and the pursuit of truth.
